چکیده

Meningitis is one of the most common CNS emergencies. Aseptic meningitis is the most prevalent type of meningitis. The clinical features initially are not specific. Enteroviruses have more than 60 serotypes which are culpable for more than 85% of aseptic meningitis. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a highly sensitive test for detection of viruses; therefore by using of this method, diagnosis of aseptic meningitis can be achieved rapidly. We can use this method even for detection of viral types, and therefore choosing the best treatment. We have evaluated 47 cases of highly suspicious to meningitis in a cross sectional manner by PCR method. We found 4 positive cases for enterovirus. It seems that, by using of PCR method we can differentiate aseptic meningitis easily and rapidly, so decreasing costs can be achieved by this method.

The Association of Non-polio Enteroviruses with Aseptic Meningitis in Children in Iran

Introduction : Viral meningitis is an inflammation of the leptomeninges as a manifestation of central nervous system (CNS) infection, and more than 85% of viral meningitis cases are caused by non-polio enteroviruses. Molecular methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are increasingly used to detect and type non-polio enteroviruses. Here, we describe the impact of these viruses on asept...

Viral etiology of aseptic meningitis among children in southern Iran.

Aseptic meningitis refers to a clinical syndrome of meningeal inflammation in which bacteria cannot be identified in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The viral etiology and the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of aseptic meningitis among children aged 2 months to 15 years in Shiraz, southern Iran were determined. From May 2007 to April 2008, 65 patients were admitted to t...

Three cases of mumps virus and enterovirus coinfection in children with enteroviral meningitis

Several viruses are responsible for aseptic meningitis; however, in the region of Southwest Iran, the role played by each virus is still not very well known. The aim of this study is to determine the relative frequencies of mumps virus, herpes viruses, and enteroviruses, as well as coinfections among them, in patients with aseptic meningitis. In this cross-sectional study, samples of cerebrospin...

An outbreak of echovirus meningitis in children.

An outbreak of aseptic meningitis in children as evidenced by increase in the number of admissions in a tertiary care hospital is described. Clinical data and stool samples were collected from 25 hospitalized infants and young children. The stool samples were subjected to virological investigations. Fever and vomiting were the commonest symptoms. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed lymphocytic ple...

Aseptic Meningitis Epidemic during a West Nile Virus Avian Epizootic

While enteroviruses have been the most commonly identified cause of aseptic meningitis in the United States, the role of the emerging, neurotropic West Nile virus (WNV) is not clear. In summer 2001, an aseptic meningitis epidemic occurring in an area of a WNV epizootic in Baltimore, Maryland, was investigated to determine the relative contributions of WNV and enteroviruses. A total of 113 asept...
